Thailand has been known as “the land of smile”. The country's name was changed from Siam to Thailand in 1993. Thailand has an area of about 517,000 square Km., or about the size of France, and is divided into 76 provinces (or jangwat). The population is about 65 million. About 95% of The Thai citizens are Theravada Buddhists, who practice a form of Buddhism received from Sri lanka . About 4% of the Thais in the south are Muslim. Another 1% are Christians, Hindus, Taoists and Mahayana Buddhists. Thailand has three seasons: rainy ( June-October), Cool (November-February), and Hot (March-May). Most of Thailand is very humid, except during the cooler months in the mountains of the north.
